Living With An Iodine Allergy
Exactly what do you need to know about an Iodine Allergy? Are you allergic to iodine? If you have never been in contact with iodine how would you know?
Are you allergic to fish?
Most people who have an Iodine Allergy find think they are allergic to fish because they have an allergic reaction when they eat seafood. This is because the largest naturally occurring source of iodine is dissolved in seawater.
Just because a person is allergic to fish or shellfish does not mean that it is because of the iodine. It is possible to be allergic to fish for other reasons. It is very hard to determine if you have iodine allergies or sensitivity.
Uses of iodine
Iodine is used in the medical community. The two main uses are topically as an antiseptic and as a dye. Common table salt contains iodine as well.
People who develop an allergic reaction to topically administered iodine do not necessarily also indicate that they are allergic to iodine when consumed. When donating blood it is common to be asked if you are allergic to iodine, it is used to sterilize the area around the artery. The solution they are using also contains Povidone and you might be having an allergic reaction to it instead of the iodine.
Symptoms of an iodine allergic reaction
* Experience difficult breathing
* Swelling of the throat and tongue
* Anaphylactic shock
* A rash on the skin around the area exposed to iodine
You might have an iodine sensitivity.
With iodine sensitivity, you can experience fever, excessive sweating or nausea. If you are injected with iodine and suffer extreme symptoms, you would be diagnosed with an Iodine Allergy. If you see a rash on your skin after applying iodine, you will more than likely have an allergy to the iodine.
For these reasons, how to know if you have an iodine allergy is difficult unless you actually have an allergic reaction. If you eat fish and experience an upset stomach, nausea or vomiting, it could be the oils from the fish causing your reaction. During an x-ray however, you would know for sure you are allergic to iodine. The difficulty in breathing is the most obvious indicator.
If you need help with answering the question, how to know if you have an iodine allergy, you might need to visit an allergist to have a skin test done. If you plan to have x-rays done requiring the use of iodine injection and you have experienced nausea or other symptoms when eating fish or using iodine on the skin, you need to have a skin test done to be safe. Not everyone will have the same reactions to iodine allergies, therefore, there is no one answer that completely answers the question. It is always better to be safe than sorry with your health.

I'm allergic to shell fish-- is it because of the iodine-can I pretreat it and eat it?
I can eat fish- catfish, halibut, salmon, tuna-etc. with no problem, but, when I eat shellfish-Lobster, crab, shrimp
I swell up and itch in the eyes and throat to the point where one time it was an emergency situation. My throat almost totally closed.
I was told that I was not actually allergic to the shellfish itself but, to the Iodine that fisheries used to kill microbes etc that some foods like crabs, lobsters and shrimp have.
So, I also refuse to have IV contrast with CT scans because people said that the Iodine that they use can trigger an allergic reaction.
Is all of the above true?
Also, I have a friend who says -- It's ok to eat shellfish when you are allergic if you pretreat by taking 100 mg of Prednizone and 100mg of Benadryl. Just for a very, very rare thing to taste a little seafood.

HSG X-Ray Dye and BAD Seafood Allergy...Is This Safe??
The doctor seems to think it is pretty safe...however I'm very nervous. When they asked if I was allergic to seafood, they had to go talk to the doctor...and he explained that I could have a reaction to the dye. He put me on some medicines... benadryl and prednasone, so it would lessen the effect.
I've only had one reaction, I ate some frys from Long John Silvers and I had to be taken to the hospital and given all kinds of shots. It felt like someone had grabbed my neck and was choking me. My mouth and face also swelled up.
Does this sound safe to you? I want to believe that the doctor is right in saying that it is safe but I really don't know what to think. I supposed to go in monday morning... He also said there is no other way to do the HSG other than X-Ray dye.

Ophthalmology MD Did I Have Reaction To The Drops?
Yesterday I had an eye exam my the Opthalmalogist (an eye MD). I had four different drops before the exam. First ones were an anesthetic and the others were for dialation. Some accidently got on my face. As the drops began to dialate my eyes my face began to feel hotter and hotter and very tight. My face and ears became bright red.
After the exam, as my eyes began to return to normal so did the redness and "heat" in my face.
What the heck was in those drops? It seems like the drops dialated more than just my pupils!

food allergy and alcohol?
I am allergic to shrimp, therefore I assume I am allergic to crab/lobster/scallops, etc. as well. I was not always allergic to shrimp, and I LOVE to eat shrimp (and other shellfish) but about 15 years ago I began having reactions. I still ate it, but only occasionally. About 6 years later I had a really bad reaction to some bay shrimp and had to leave the restaurant I was at to get to the emergency room because my tongue was swelling down into my throat. So, I decided to not eat any shellfish again, sadly.
Well, I was drinking one night with my boyfriend, and we went to Red Lobster (where my bro worked) and I decided to be brave/stupid and eat some crab that my boyfriend had ordered. It didn't cause a reaction, so about two weeks later I ate shellfish again, shrimp this time, but I made sure that before I ate it I had already had a glass of wine, and I kept drinking while I was eating the shrimp, which somehow prevented a reaction.
So, my question is this: does alcohol consumption have something to do with this non-allergic reaction? I should note that years later, when I was in Culinary school, I had prepared a shrimp dish in class, and decided to take a very small bite, and I had a reaction within minutes.
My second question is what is it in shrimp that causes the allergic reaction? Somebody told me it was iodine, but I don't know that to be true. I also heard that it's because the shrimp's diet consists of all the crap (basically) floating in the water, and that causes the reaction.
So, what is it?

When breaking a bone or other serious injury, should you keep the victim concious or let him/her pass out?
By keeping the victim concious I am talking about asking him/her questions.
There is no real emergency this is for story/fantasy purposes only.
I ask here because law enforcement members have experience with this.
I'll rephrase the question "If someone breaks a bone or other serious injury, should you keep him concious or let him pass out?"
Well it's not torture or painful interrogations dumbshit.
